Nigeria Election Security Summit

agos Travel Inn, 39-41 Toyin Street, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria
Start Date:
February 9, 2019
End Date:
February 9, 2019

With less than a month to Africa’s biggest election, a record-breaking 84 million Nigerian electorates would have another opportunity to vote in the presidential, gubernatorial and legislative elections in a democratic dispensation that remains uninterrupted since 1999 but embroiled in the risk of violence particularly in some states where the stakes are high or others where conflicts fester.

Election security is critical to ensure community confidence in the system and guaranteeing a free and fair election. Unfortunately, Nigeria’s last three elections have been quite deadly with over 100 Nigerians killed before and after the 2015 polls – and those were considerably peaceful compared to the previous two elections of 2007 and 2011.

In February 2019, Nigerians in their millions from 774 local government areas will visit 120,000 polling stations across the length and breadth of the nation to cast their votes for over 50 presidential candidates and others standing at different capacity for election.

With Nigeria election security snapshot, it is critical that election security is viewed from a strategic viewpoint and practical solutions put forward by different stakeholders with a stake in the Nigeria Project.
